Garment's Description

The garment is hand-made from recycled discarded material.

The garment design was inspired by a series of nightmares I had after seeing the movie Black Swan and more specifically by hypnagogic dream imagery of a giant moth floating over my bed. The texture of the moth wings fascinated me and looked like it was made from an organic, moving, woven material resembling white centipede-like rope. Afterwards I became obsessed with finding a technique to resemble the organic construction of the moth wings and researched crafts like crocheting, knitting and other knotting techniques like macramé, the work of designers such as Sandra Buckland and Louise Goldin, and construction materials like electrical wire, curtain rope and industrial twine.
I constructed the base frame with steel wire covered in fabric and then hand worked the surface in repetitive basic rope knots, trying to keep the end result as close to the dream imagery as possible.

I try to use ethical, ecological or recycled materials and techniques as much as possible and the skirt was up-cycled from discarded wedding dress samples and scraps. It consists of 100% pure silk pieces in satin, organza and habotai and the pieces were hand pleated and sewn. The bodice was handcrafted from a 60% silk/ 40% nylon-blend curtain twine.

Biography

Collection description:
Hypnagogic by Ek_Bacharach is a conceptual women’s wear range with a strong focus on tailoring and hand worked crafts. I suffer from Sleep Paralysis, a REM sleep disorder characterized by terrifying nightmares and hallucinations and most of the inspiration for my s/s 2012 range came from a series of nightmares I was having at the time. The nightmares all had an undercurrent and theme from the movie Black Swan and centered on a ‘White Swan’ character. The dreams later turned out to be about unresolved issues towards a neurosurgeon who misdiagnosed me a few years earlier. His name was Dr. Swanepoel. That translates to ‘Swan Lake’ in Dutch.
